Anne Rice's Spiritual Biography

I just finished reading Anne Rice's, Called Out of Darkness: a spiritual confession. It took me a little while to get into, but in the end... Awesome. She talks about how she left Christianity. How she became a principled Atheist. She talks about how she held onto her Atheism long after she realized God really does exist. She talks about her disillusionment with those who deny God and with popular modern religious and (esp) biblical scholarship and how shallow it is. She talks about her own sins. She talks about her struggles with some teachings of the church (for her Catholic). She talks a lot about her deep love for Jesus.

There is one line. It was a throw away line that really haunts me. At one point she said that she sometimes finds loving her enemies easier than loving her friends.

Wow. I've never been able to articulate it, but I think that's true for me sometimes. At least with your enemies, you love them, but you expect them to hurt you. With your friends you are a bit more vulnerable. When they disappoint you; it hurts much worse. SOMETIMES it's easier to love your enemies than your friends. Go chew on that. Or better yet, support ministry in Bangkok by buying the book. It's highlighted to the right of your screen.
