Sunday recap... Do not fear

I'm on vacation this week and so was away from International Church. I missed it. Haven't heard anything about this morning, but I did hear that the evening went well.

Our family walked down to the Peaks Island Baptist Church today. It's an independent Baptist church. Probably a bit fundamentalist.

I've always maintained that there is more than one kind of fundamentalist. There are the mean small minded variety like the negative folks you hear about in the media that make you ashamed to be called Christian. And there are also some very sincere, humble folks who just love God and read their Scriptures very literally.

The pastor of Peaks Island Baptist used language like the humble, sincere variety, but actually he isn't much of a fundamentalist. He was way too loose with his application for that... And I think we all appreciated him for it.

The sermon was from Joshua chapter 1. He talked about how fearful Joshua was at doing what he knew God called him to do and he related that to how we are often fearful. And how God empowers us to overcome our fears just as He did for Joshua. It was a great sermon on a variety of levels. One of the really striking things was his personal humility. On a couple of occasions, he said something like, "we need to do it like this..., not like I did." and he'd tell us how he messed it up.

Next Sunday should be at Hilton Head Island Community Church. We worshipped there last year and really enjoyed it.
