The bizzare way Jesus' disciples choose a replacement for Judas

Here's a link to a Bible study we did last night.

We have a group in our home studying Acts for the next 9 weeks. We're going to do our best to try to do the first 9 chapters. We are roughly following NT Wrights study guide.

The group last night was great. It was fun to make a few new friends and reconnect in Bible study with a few others. If you are part of the group and just couldn't make it, click open the link and you can do a self-study.

The yellow highlights are points that we are trying to emphasize throughout the study. As we go through the first nine chapters we are going to look for (1) things that relate to living as a Christian as a minority (2) things that relate to justice issues and (3) things that relate to the development of early church thought.

We did that well last night.

One of the shockers for me in the preparation was trying to come to terms with how the replacement for Judas was chosen. There were no character requirements. Only that he be male, have been around a long time (since the beginning of Jesus' ministry) and that he win the casting of lots! It's the casting of lots that really surprised me. It's a little superstitious, don't you think?

And it is worthy to note that as time went on, the church did develop character based criterion for leadership.

It is GREAT to know that God works with us in whatever capacity we are ready... lots or character.
