Hunting Economics?

I'm saddened when I read or watch the news. American lawmakers are busy arguing about how to recover performance bonuses paid by AIG (how big would those bonuses have been IF the company had actually made money?) while entire countries around the world suffer.

I was struck by a comment from the MDC party's finance minister in Zimbabwe. He just got into the job and discovered that the government was essentially running on money fueled by taxes collected on beer and cigarettes. Biti said, "We are now implementing the basic law of hunting economics," the minister declared. "What we gather is what we eat."

"Hunting economics." That's a great phrase. It might do some American lawmakers and insurance executives good to consider it.
