Good soil

I mentioned that my home group is studying evangelism. Last week one of our lesson points was that no one is beyond God's gace... and so the habit that many Christians have of trying to figure out who will be most receptive to the message is pointless. One of the passages we looked at was the parable of the sower from Matthew 13. If you aren't familiar - look it up. The gist is different kinds of people respond in different ways to God's love (just like seeds respond differently when planted in different kinds of soil. Rocky, thorny, hard and good soil produce different results. Same seed (God's love/word) different results (people).

Neil Cole has a great quote about that in Organic Church. He's arguing that often the roughest people on the outside are the most receptive to the message. He says that "bad people make great soil because they have so much fertilizer in their lives."

I love that quote.
